Protect Your Mouth From Gum Disease in Surrey

Do I need to be referred?

You do not need to be referred by your general dentist in order to make an appointment with Dr. Colfer. Our centre offers a range of specialty services and procedures.

What are dental implants and what are the advantages?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants are one of the most attractive and natural solutions available. They are fixed as securely as natural teeth but cannot be distinguished from the real teeth in function and appearance. Dental implants look and feel so natural, they are an excellent and preferred solution for replacement teeth.

Dental implants are ideal for people in good general oral health who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason.

Dental Implants have advantages over conventional dentures and bridgework. They are designed to fit securely, ensuring natural taste and eating enjoyment is not impaired. Dental implants do not rely on neighbouring teeth to support the implant like a bridge, which is a major benefit to your long-term oral health. Dental implants help to preserve healthy teeth and prevent bone loss and gum recession.

What is periodontal disease?

Caused by chronic inflammatory response to bacteria in the gums, periodontal disease or gum disease can break down and destroy the gums and bone that support your teeth. The bacterium irritates the gum and creates the inflammation. If untreated, periodontal disease can lead to adult tooth loss. Additionally, periodontal disease can increase the risk of serious health problems like heart disease, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Periodontal disease might not show symptoms right away, so it is important to arrange a consultation with a periodontist if any of these risk factors apply to you:

  • Tobacco use
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Family history of periodontal disease

Dr. Colfer can determine your risk of periodontal disease and recommend appropriate treatment.

Why do I need periodontal surgery?

Periodontal surgery may be needed if your general dentist has determined that the tissues around your teeth are no longer healthy. The defects caused by periodontal disease may require surgery to correct the gums. Dr. Colfer can diagnose you and recommend the appropriate therapy needed to get your gums back to optimal health.

Will it hurt?

We aim to make your treatment as pleasant and comfortable as possible. Our modern treatment options and refined techniques aim to minimize any discomfort. We offer the latest in dental technology so that our patients have a positive and relaxing experience when visiting our office. Our patients tell us that they felt little or no discomfort during treatments.

How long will it take to heal?

Healing times vary, although patients can normally expect to enjoy their normal routine the following day. You can discuss any special post-operative considerations you may have with Dr. Colfer to minimize disruption to your daily activities.

Will my insurance cover fees?

For periodontal services, most dental insurance policies may pay only a portion of the price. Although every patient is unique and estimates can be difficult to pin down, we will do our best to offer you the assistance in understanding your payment requirements based on the information available to us.

We will gladly file your claim on your behalf. However, you may want to submit the claim yourself given that insurers process claims filed directly by patients faster than those filed by the dental offices.
